N.Z. TIMBERS

USE BY RAILWAY DEPARTMENT. DUNEDIN, August 1. Mr W. Poynton, the timber expert of the Railways Department, has just finished a visit to the native forests of Southland. Part of his duty is to find out how far New Zealand wood can be used for the Department’s purposes. It is understood that as a result of this tour in the south, arrangements have been made by which a considerable quantity of silver bireli, and other native -woods will be properly dried at the mills, thus overcoming one of the obstacles to the use of such timbers. Sawmillers and others are agreed that a drying period of about two and a half years suffices to bring this wood intij a condition suitable not only for waggon building but for the finer branch of car construction.
