Most of the .Dilnedin (business men who were this-.morning invited to say what they think of the Budget replied to the effect that they would like to peruse the Finance Minister’s speech' at leisure before venturing definite opinions on the subject generally, but there was common consent on one point—the increase of the primage duty on imports from 1 to 2 per cent. It is severely condemned. TEACHING OF EVOLUTION. REPLY TO PROTEST. HAMILTON, August 1. The Minister for Education-, replying' to a Hamilton protest against- the reference to evolution in the new; school syllabus, said that the intent--ion had been misunderstood. There• was no intention that the theory of evolution in connexion with the ancestry of mankind should he taught in the schools; It was quite unlikely that teachers would! extract the wrong meaning from the reference in the syllabus. “The intention of the syllabus,” lie said, “is that children should be led by a first-hand study of Nature- to discover some part, however small, of the wonderful plan of creation, gaining thereby an increased love and reverence for the Creator.”
ALLEGED THEFT. ; AUCKLAND, Aug. 2. A clerk in the Railway Department whose name was ordered- to be suspressed by Mr Hunt, S.M., was charged in the Magistrate’s Court with stealing . £l6B, the property of the Railway Department.
