The 25th. anniversary of the opening of the Matamata settlement by the Seddon Government fell ljist week: The Matamata estate was acquired from the Maoris in 1865 by Mr) J. C. Firth. Abolition of the rating exemption enjoyed by the 'Government, local body, religious and educational areas in the county was urged by a deputation from the Hutt County Council which waited on the Minister of Lands and the Minister of Internal Affairs recently. In replying to the representations the Minister of Lands said it seemed anomalous that a limiting provision should have been made for boroughs and not for counties. He did not think the question of applying it to counties could' ..ave been raised when the.matter was before Parliament. Had sepresentations been made at the time no doubt some provision would have. been, incorporated. The Minister promised to give the representations, of the deputation his serious consideration.
