A NEW DESIGN

FOR. FIRING STEAMSHIP. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyrightj. (Received this day at 9. a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 1. The Swiftpool is the first new steamship on Lloyd’s British register, designed for world trading, which is completely dependent on powdered fuel firing. It is being inspected by experts at West Hartlepool. She is of 9000 tons, length 421 ft., and is unique insofar as she has no alternative for a hand-fired boiler. She is designed solely to operate on a hand system of powdered fuel. The main bunkers’ capacity is two' thousand tons. An arrangement with the upper deck hatch has been provided for trimming coal into the daily service bunker. There are two pul. ©risers on the stokehold floor, convenient to the bunkers for breaking down slack coal. There is a reserve fuel supply overhead in the stokehold, sumcient for several hours’ steaming, with the pulverisers out of action.
