Comic Opera has been invariably welk done by the local amateurs, who have many notable successes to their credit. The pleasing , announcement of a three night season of “Rip Van Winkle” at the Princess Theatre, commencing' on August 13th. (Tuesday week) will therefore be hailed with pleasure;' The opera selected is a very happy choice. There is a fine field for action,' embracing a large caste and much scope for the players. “Rip Van Winkle” is by the author of “Paul Jones” and “The Chimes of Normanby” both of which have been performed here by our amateurs. Mrs Staveley identified .with both in connection witlj which the lady also took the leading parts. On ;this occasion Mrs Staveley is the producer and conductor, giving her whole attention to the details of the’presentation. A? Mrs Staveley lias never had a failure in her many productions, patrons will look forward to another pronounced success, which will be .the more'notable in that it will be Mrs Staveley’s last public effort amongst us, having decided to leave for Canterbury shortly. Mrs Staveley in selecting the caste has been very happy in her choice for among the principals are many notable performers whose names alone will be an attraction in themselves.
