Damage estimated at over £2OOO was done by a fire which broke out at 4.10 o’clock • this morning in a block of buildi:.: s > y Uie National Electrical i.oy, Ltd, and Alessrs G. ... .Nicholas.and Coy. The latter firm, ivh- .are ,tra. tor agents, and who also run a battery service station, are in. c..iel .-uav.. The fire ’apparently began on the top floor, occupied by the National Electrical Coy. whose electrical fittings valued at about £BO, for the St. Alary’s Schoolroom and the National Alortgage and -Agency Coy’s new premises were destroyed. Alessrs G. H. Nicholas and. Coy’s workshop, on the top floor, was destroyed, car accessories, battery, and tractor fittings and parts being totally destroyed. A billiard room adjoining, owned by Nicholas and:Coy, and leased by Air A. Begg/ was also badly damaged.
, A PROTEST. N.Z. ATHLETIC UNION DECISION. CHRISTCHURCH, August 1. A strong protest was entered by a meeting of delegates to the North Canterbury Centre of the Athletic Union last evening against the decision of the New Zealand Union to grant the New Zealand Road Championship to Taranaki. The Timaru to Christchurch road race was to have been held on October sth and donations had already been received to help make it a success. , ■
