Since the introduction of ' the 60 hour week in the into mills from July first, unrest amongst mill hands rs slowly extending and now between 20,000 and 40,000 are idle. Picketing is being vigorously organised, aiming at a general strike on the lines of the cotton mills dispute. A BIG ESTATE. LONDON, July 31. Mortimer Singer, who died on June 24, through an overdose of veronal, left £402,225. He 'bequeathed to his brother £12,000 as ennpensation for selling him a racehorse which turned out a failure. ,
INQUEST VERDICT. . LONDON, July 91. At the Croydon inquest the Coroner found a verdict that Mrs Sidney died of acute arsenical poisoning. There was insufficient evidence whether she killed herself or was murdered by some person-or persons unknown. FRENCH POLITICS. CONFIDENCE IN, BRIAND. ;• -i (Received this day n+ 12.25.'-p.hi.) PARIS July 31. The Chamber after passing a vote of confidence in M. Briand by 325 votes to 136 rose for the summer recess. STOWAWAYS FINED. LONDON, July 31. Geo. MacDonald of Glasgow, Henry Meech, no fixed abode, and David William Smith, of Dunedin,, were sentenced to a month’s imprisonment at Woolwich for stowing away on the Matakana from Wellington. All declared they caetn to England because work was unavailable in New Zealand.
