REX IN “ THE DEVIL HORSE ” FRIDAY. iFartli tremors and explosions combined, in addition to the ordinary discomforts and privations of camp life, tp make the four months’ location trip off the Hal Roach troupA Winking “The Devil Horse ” one of the most dangerous ever experienced by any company. “ The Devil-Horse ” is coming to the Princess Theatre on Friday. Yakima ..Ciinutt, leading man of the human cast, with Rex, king of wild horses, in the picture- spent three weeks in a hospital at Harding, Montana, a small town on the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul, thirty-three miles from the troupe’s'camp, with serious second degree burns.,f Rex, a highly sensitive animal, was not the most, manageable star .in the business after his experience with Montana earthquakes. Fred Jackman was fighting against a dozen small obstacles; in addition to these ■serious ones, in the effort -to produce the feature in , the Crow reservation section around Lodge Grass,, the site of Custer’s last battle. Minor . accidents occurred several times. The company left Los AngelCs with thirty-five people ancV. eight horses. The accident which put Canutt, .a popular actor jm Hollywood and champion horseman\ noted •for' his “ daredevil ” stunts, in the hospital, was spectacular.' Riding over a ridge and down a rough slope into the camera, carrying a special flare in each hand, lie was going at breakneck speed when one off the flares exploded. The horse was uninjured, hut Canutt was picked up pretty much burned. A car was driven to Harding over rough roads and a doctor brought back before Canutt could be satisfactorily treated. Then he .was taken to' the Harding Hospital. There were two series of earthquakes. A wire to the studio regarding the second series—the ones, most severe in western and central portions of the state, not # being felt there—indicated that Rex stood tlm ordeal of the actual quake quite oalmlv and did his stuff as a temperamental actor afterwards: “ Earthquakes last night damaged cabins and demobs' ed log stable occupied by Rex. It-'Warred at dinner time. All hands went to w ; ork and Rex stood quietly, while We pulled away debris. Escaped with; minor scratches.”
The usual supports will also be shown including topical and comedy and further episodes off “The Vanishing Rider.”
