OPOSSUM TRAPPING

EXTENSION OF SEASON. (By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, July 31. The extension of the opossum trapping season in the Westland district was announced in the House to-day by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr de la Perelle. Mr Clyde Carr asked the Minister of Internal Affairs what steps he proposed to take in developing the opossum trapping industry, particularly in South Westland, with a view incidentally to relieving unemployment in Timaru. Mr de la Perelle replied that an open season for the taking of opossums had been declared from Ist June to 31st July. The seasons for taking of these animals in theßuller and Grey districts and the Nelson Acclimatisation districts were Ist June to 31st July in regard to the two first-named, and Ist July to 31st August for Nelson. The question of granting a short extension of the season in the Westland-Grev districts and the Buller Acclimatisation districts had been under consideration, owing to the fact that the trappers had not been able to take full advantage of the present season on account of the recent earthquakes; and it had been decided to grant a fortnight’s extension.
