CRUISER EXPLOSION
ADMIRALTY STATEMENT.
, ... -jii
(Received this day at 11.25. a.m.) RUGBY, July 30.
The Admiralty announces it has ascertained the cause of the recent gun accident on the cruiser Devonshire is attributed to a hang-fire of veiy short duration in one gun of the eight-inch turret'. Owing to the simultaneous discharge of other guns in the same turret it was probably momentarily thought the gun in question had also tired and the operation of re-loading was then commenced. It appears probable the mistake was immediately discovered, but before it could be rectified the charge in the gun exploded and blew out the partially unlocked breach block. The great force of the explosion also ignited the cordite charges waiting in their containers to be loaded for the next round.
