RELATIONS WITH EGYPT. A RUMOURED TREATY. CONSIDERATION GIVEN BY CABINET. (British Otiicial Wireless.) RUGBY, July 27. With reference to the publication in Egyptian newspapers of the proposals for a treaty between Egypt and Great Britain, it is understood that proposals substantially of this nature are being discussed in London. The published version is, however, incomplete, and not very accurate. As stated in the House of Commons yesterday, conversations have taken place m London which have resulted in a series of proposals which are being considered, by a sub-committee of the Cabinet, with assistance from the heads of the Service Departments. They have still to come before Cabinet as a whole.
King Fuad and the Prime Minister of Egypt, Mohammed Mahmud Pasha, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hafez Afilfy Pasha, arrived in England a week ago. Mr Arthur Henderson, Foreign Secretary, answering a question in the House of Commons, said that it was not proposed to have conversations regarding relations between Egypt and Britain.
Lord Lloyd, whose resignation as High Commissioner for Egypt was accepted last week, arrived in England at the same time.
Mahmud was educated at Oxford. During the disturbed days of 1919-1921 he was n strong supporter of Znglilul Pasha, and spent a period of detention in -Malta. He was a member of Nalias Pasha’s Cabinet in 1927, but in 1928 formed his own administration. Pie started his premiership strongly by establishing a virtual dictatorship, “ not as a tyrant, but-as a benevolent dictator.” He is carrying out an advanced programme oif land settlement and drainage.
