SKINS TAKEN OUT OF SEASON
“You have made yourself liable to a fine of £50,” said Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Auckland Police Court last week, to Andrew Beclier, labourer, of Upper Waiwera, who wag charged with having opossum skins in his possession without authoritty. Inspector J. H. Rose, who prosecuted on behalf of the Acclimatisation Society, said soon after the trapping season opened a visit was paid to a shed occupied by defendant, and a number of opossum skins were found. Some were fresh, but some were old, and obviously could not have been taken since the season oponed. Defendant gave the explanation that-one of the skins came from an opossum that had been killed by a motor car and that two were given to him by neighbours, but he admitted subsequently that they had been taken out of season. Mr Hunt: The penalty for this offence is pretty severe, is it not? Mr Rose: Yes sir. The Act provides a fine of £lO for the first skin and £5 for the others. This man has a license, and I understand he has taken about £l5O worth of skins already this season. Mr Hunt: Well, I hope it will be a lesson to him. He is fined £5 and costs £2 11s..
