Dr T. H. Valintine’s visit to the >.est Coast impressed him with the pathos of the disasters, and, more tlmii anything else, with the unconquerable ’spirit, -courage, and fortitude <' people in the backblocks. He met mr who have lost almost everything the l hold dear, and yet are : hopeful and cheerful, helping other sufferers, hiding their own troubles, and preparing again to enter upon the toil for a, living. The Director-General of Health is particularly proud bf the gallant behaviour of 'members of the hospital staffs Oat Westport and Nelson. The Westport and Nelson Hospitals have been so badly damaged that the cost of repairing them will he more than was estimated. Repairs will he taken in hand as soon as possible. Haunter, Hokitika, Gre.vmouth, Vestport, Denniston, Murchison, and Seddonville were visited by Dr Valintine. Ivaramea he could not reach, on account of the roads. He reports that water-supply and sanitation have been attended to in Westport, and that, from a public health point of view, the menace there has been removed.
