Since the Radium Department at the Christchurch Hospital was opened three radium needles have been lost, the discovery of the disappearance of the third having been made a week ago. Exhaustive searches have been carried out in all likely places, even the furnace being subjected to a minute examination, but so far without result. In appearance radium needles bear a close resemblance to gramophone needles, but when they are in use a v thread and button are attached. It is possible that some person, not knowing their value, may have thrown them away. It is stated that the Hospital Board is poorer by about £4o by the loss of the needles.

Beveridge, of Wellington, who has just returned from the East. “You see, Tokio is being rebuilt after, the great earthquake, and the streets in' wet weather are pretty muddy, so it would never do to have everyone tramping over the gleaming floors and clean mats. There is a place provided for everyone’s footwear, and it is quite common to see 1000 pairs of boots and shoes, all neatly tabled in an anteroom at the entrance. Each visitor is given a ‘tab’ corresponding with the one on his shoes, but he has to pay his bill before he gets his shoes,”
