Hokitika Ladies’ Hockey Club had an easy victory • over Kokatahi Club by 8 goals to 0, playing on a slippery field yesterday on Cass Square. Rain fell during the match, so short time was played in the last half.. Scorers,, were: M. Sumner (4), N. Olsen (2), J. Hall (1) and one from a Ivokatahi player accidentally sending the ball into the net. Best players for Kokatahi were Misses Baird, Pfalilert, Marshall and Cron. Mr J. Butland was an efficient referee. In the ladies’ hockey match played at Victoria Park yesterday afternoon, Mawhera defeated United A by 3 goals to nil, and Stars defeated United B by 3 goals to nil. DANNEVIKKE DEFEATS ' AUSTRALIA. It was, a fast exhibition of hockey, the visitors giving a .good display of stick work, but Dannevirke put up 1 a stubborn defence when occasion demanded for the opening spell.,, The Australians drew first blood about a quarter of an hour after starting, C. Coinrie finding the net; this being the only score in the first half in which both sides attacked in turn.
On changing over Dannevirke started with a good attack and then slowed down, and ‘the spell was nearly half over before they made a great attack, and McPherson evened with a great slanting shot. Hopes of supporters of the home side were soon dashed to the ground when Australia became aggressive, and C. Comrie again sent in a hot shot which found the net. The Australians at this stage were
having the better of the contest, and looked sure to win, when .Dannevirke suddenly asserted themselves, and provided the big crowd with plenty of thrills and great jubilation when Earl evened scores with a fine shot, and with a couple of minutes to go, Mclntosh secured a meritorious victory for Dannevirke bv sending in another fine goal, making the fifth of the match. In the last quarter of an hour the game was played at a great pace, foreman at centre half was the star performer for the winners, playing an outstanding game both on offence and defence. Mclntosh, Smith, and Ear! were prominent in the forwards. For the Australians, Nettleton and Todkill were most prominent of the backs, and Pulley, C. Comrie and Stephens in the forwards. The winners were the faster. The state of the ground slowed the pace of the ball down to suit (Dannevirke. The Australians left this evening to play Eltham to-morrow.
HOCKEY TOUR. WELLINGTON, July 25. The Ladies’ Hockey Association has deferred the question of sending a team to South Africa till September 17th, and meanwhile will re-open negotiations with those Associations which have not promised financial support. The selection of the team will also be proceeded with. The selectors will visit the various districts to Watch players.
