Preliminary arrangements are now in hand for the production of the comic opera “Rip Van Winkle.” The Hokitika dates are August 13, 14, and 15. On August 20th the opera will be staged at the Greymouth Opera House There is considerable interest being manifested in mining in northern Westland, where several mining areas are being taken up and will probably be worked by dredges electrically driven. Quite a large area of suitable dredging country has been secured in the Fox district. Infectious and other notifiable diseases reported in the Canterbury and West Coast Healtli Districts for the week ended noon on Monday totalled 60, as follows Canterbury—Scarlet fever, 26; diphtheria, 5; tuberculsosis, 8; puerperal sepsis, 2; erysipelas, 2. West Coast—Scarlet fever, 1; diphtheria, 3; pneumonic influenza, 3. Deaths: Canterbury—Pneumonia, 1. West Coast—Pneumonia, 1. The gas - cooking demonstration under the direction of Mrs Heinz was held successfully at the Soldiers’ Hall yesterday. Two modern gas cookeis were in use, a Champion and a Miramar. Results in both instances were very satisfactory. The cookers have the latest automatic heat regulation, and they give excellent results. One user remarked: “ The gas cooker is my best friend.” The cooking class will be continued on August 6.
The model of an egg of the great auk, now extinct, has been presented to the Hokitika Museum by Mr E. J. Haynes of the Canterbury Museum. The habitat of tin’s bird was the North Atlantic. Some 77 birds and 70 eggs of this bird have been preserved, the last examples having been obtained in 1844. It was a flightless bird about the size df a goose and was found on the shores of Newfoundland, Labrador, Iceland, the Faeroes and Scandinavia. Bones have been found on the Scottish and Irish coasts, and in sea caves in the north of England. The model of the egg kindly deposited here is from a specimen in Edinburgh Museum. Original eggs have realised' £453 each, and the birds £1250. An egg found in a Christchurch collection was sent to London and realised £2OO. The value of the model is not less than two guineas. Owing to the unfavourable condition of the bar at Oleum the Gael’s trip to there has been delayed until next spring tides. Mr Geo. Bell, of Runanga, was admitted to the Grey River Hospital , on Saturday suffering from a broken ankle, the result off a fall while descending steps m front of the Miners’ Hall. Owing to his sheep having been worried by dogs last' night, and also about a month ago, Mr M. Keenan notifies that poison is being laid on his T.G.L., Itimu Flat. Owing to yesterday’s outward express running at Jackson’s into a number of cattle, a couple of which were killed, there was a delay of about half an hour, which led to the inward express being likewise late in its arrival. Jeffries and Co. notify an important realisation sale of sawmill property in the mart at Hokitika on Saturday, August 3rd, at 11 a.m., comprising the mill plant and bush areas of the Blackwater mill as a going concern.
