It is notified in this issue that the opossum trapping season in the Westland Acclimatisation District has been extended until August 14tli. The Westland County Council to-day issued notices for the annual County rates. Rebate of five, per centum will he allowed on the current year’s rates paid oil or before August 22nd. Deceased had reached the age of 89 years. He was torn in Denmark ,and was known among the old gold miners as “Copenhagen Charlie.” He came to New Zealand 61 yeark ago and followed the gold rushes to many parts of the Coast. He never married and had no known relations in New Zealand. Capital accounts are heard of the. preparation of “Rip Van Winkle” opera set down for presentation here in three weeks’ time. There is an unusually strong caste, and the promise of a very fine display. There are over 80 performers in the troupe, and with the staging and dressing and, special lighting, a very hrave display should he made. It has been deckled to open the box plan on August sth. Mrs Stavelev has tne production in a very advanced stage already. At a meeting of the Executive of the Westland Progress League yesterday, arrangements were advanced for the proposed local display at the Canterbury Winter Show, opening on the 10th. August. Mr Evans reported on. arrangements made with the Government officers at Wellington, and made suggestions regarding the local display which were approved. Mr E. M. Marriner, the organiser of the Winter Show, who was present, gave particulars regarding details, and promised assistance in respect to various matters affecting the stand. The proposals generally were approved and Mr Coles or Mr Evans should be advised of any local exhibit of interest to add to the display. Mr El. M. Marriner, of Christchurch, Organiser for the Winter Show, who was In town yesterday, met members of the local school committees and teaching staffs in respect to the proposed schools excursion to Christchurch. Mr Evans presided at an informal meeting yesterday, when the scheme was outlined. The excursion is suggested for a month hence, to extend over tln'ee days—Thursday, Friday and Saturday, August 22nd. 23rd. and 24th. Very reasonable fares are proposed for schools, and billeting will be arranged in Christchurch for the children if required. The return fare from Hokitika for children under 15 is Gs Id, under 19 (attending school) 9s, teachers 11s 2d, adults 19s. These fares include free admission to the Show on presentation of the railway ticket. Approval of the proposal was voiced by Messrs Armstrong and Partridge and Rev Father McKay. Mr Armstrong agreed to call a special meeting of the local committee the next day to consider the matter. Dr Teichelman, Rev Father McKay and Mr Evans were appointed a sub-committee, with two to ho appointed, by the School Committee, Mr Conning to assist Mr Coles with the secretarial work.
