SPECTACULAR FIRE
DAMAGE £400,000. (Australian Press Association) MELBOURNE, July 22. The most spectacular and destructive fire which has occurred in the city since the Town Hall fire in 192 p, swept through the premises of Paynes’ Bon | Marche, Bourke Street. The flames spread to adjoining premises, including a fnrniture warehouse owned by Patterson’s Ltd., three floors of which were badly damaged. Paynes’ were completely gutted. A hundred firemen fought the flames for four hours. There were thousands of spectators. The damage is estimated at £400,000. The cause of the outbreak is unknown.
