DITTMAN SHIELD. WON BY WESTLAND. REEFTON, July 21. Westland Rugby reps, defeated those of Jnangahua at the Reef ton Racecourse on Saturday'afternoon .by 14 to 5 before a large attendance of the public, in the match for the Dittman Shield, widely Jjiangahua had held fei the past three years. The conditions were ideal for football, with only a slight drizzle of rain at the conimencement of the game. Mr T. C. Irving was referee.

Tnangalma were penalised in front of their goal, but from the easy position Stevenson failed to goal. Half-time sounded with the Inangahua team leading by 5 points to 0.

SECOND SPELL. At the commencement of the second half, play remained in midfield. The visitors were getting the ball two to one from., the scrum, but their openings were few and far between. JUNJOH KNOCK-OUT. On -Saturday afternoon Kiwi and Excelsior juniors clashed in the first game of the Breeze Shield knock-out. The game resulted in a draw, 8 points each, and was a gooil exhibition of junior football, in the ‘first half there was no score but directly after renaming Hayward scored in a- bandy position for Excelsiors, but Schroder failed with the kick. Play continued up and down the field. Kiwis finding the E.-.-ce’sior defence too strong and from a loose scrum Butlnnd. secured and kicked well no the held and from a lucky bounce Hayward secured and passed to Sumner who dashed under the posts for a really good try; Schroder was successful with the kick. Excelsiors now had an 8 points lead and Kiwis started to retaliate, throwing the hall about in good style, and from a kick and a. fast follow up White was able to get over near the posts Breeze being un.successful. Kiwis kept pegging away at the Excelsior defence and eventually found a. weak spot and Dawson secured and run over almost under the posts, Breeze converting. There was no further score and the game ended in a drew, 8 points each. Mr Williamson ably controlled the game.

At Boss, Rimu were defeated by Ross by 8 to nil. WA'IRAKAPA WIN'S AGAIN. (By Telegraph —Per Press Association.) MASTER TON, July 20. The first challenge for the Ranfurlv Shield was played to-day between the holders (Wairarapa), and Hawkes Bay. The play proved well up to Shield standard, the conditions being ideal, except for the sun being against Wairarapa in the second spell. Wairarapa played a good game, and the Hawkes Bay team proved worthy opponents. The holders- scored within the first fifteen minutes of both spells, Randall Booth drawing first blood for the holders and Jury scoring a try in the second spell, Ixitli being converted with good kicks by Fuller. The Hawkes Bay scoring was confined to the first half, which ended in their favour hv six to five. South crossill" 1 Hie line for an unconverted try, and Ruru later kicking a penalty goal for the visitors, the final score bciiur. Wni'airnpa 10. Hawkes Bay 6. NOTES ON THE PLAY. Details of the play showed that the Mill-Coolie combination was responsible for Wairarapa regaining the lead in the second hall, when the hallback, getting tne ball when the Bay team were scattered, passed to Cooke, who sent on, and Jury g t it to score amid great cheering. Hoc-lie (Wairarapa) quite overshone Yates (Hawke’s jjayj as lull back. Wilson, the Maori forward, on the Hawke’s Bay side, was outstanding, while Campbe.l was also good. M. Willoughby played well air the winners. Harvey and lr.-ine-were injured, but played on. Cooke played as well as ever, using fine judgment. Hawke’s Bay’s half was often collared in possession. In the loose the visiting pack were the better. Wairarapa made the game tight, with short lino outs.' Hawke’s Bay easily had the better of the play up till Wairarapa took the lead in the second half, but thereafter the home team showed better stamina- than expected, while the visiting pack did not last as well as was 1 anticipated. Townsend and Pickering scored tries, while Diack potted'a goal and kicked a r-ennlty and converted a try. Bell scored for the Maoris.
