SCHOOL BUILDINGS
DAMAGE BY EARTHQUAKES. CHRISTCHURCH, July 18. The Canterbury Education Board’s Building Committee had before it a report by Mr George Bignell, its West Coast foreman, on the effects of the visitation. Jll every case lie gave a detailed estimate of the cost of restoring the schools to the condition they were in previous to the earthquake, and the total for all repairs is a substantial one. “There are a few schools I have not yet been able to visit,” states Dir Bignell, “but have communicated with the committees of these schools, and the replies generally are that in their case no damage has been done. The schools I have not yet been able to visit are in South Westland, where the effects of the earthquake were not so severe as was the case in the north end of the school district. I am repairing the damage done as expeditiously as possible, and I am attending to the most urgent cases first.” Mr Bignell then proceeds to detail the damage, his estimates of the cost of the repairs being given also. The report is as follows: Grey Main School—The twelve chimneys in the main building were badly cracked, and twisted and it was found necessary to remove them.
