ON S.S. HORORATA

CHRISTCHURCH, July 18

. A greaser on the Hororata, James’ Sweeungham, was charged with having received from Geo. William Knight one pair of ladies’ shoes, the property of the New Zealand Shipping Coy. He pleaded guilty. Knight was charged with stealing the shoes, and pleaued not guilty. Frank Edwin Tiller, second officer of the Hororata, said that on the arrival of the ship at Lyttelton on Wednesday. lie inspected the hatches, and discovered extensive pillaging. Part of tne. stolen goods were afterwards ■found stowed away in various parts of the ship and of the wharf. tow.e.etingham gave evidence that lie had been asked by a member -of the crew of the. Katoa to get a pair of shoes. He .went back to. the Hororata and asked Knight for a pair. When taking them across to.' the Katoa lie was arrested. Sergt. Dunlop said the pifjaging would be serious, and probably would run to £IOO. Whole, rolls of cloth had been taken. At - least one roll was' thrown overboard. Accused were bofli convicted and were sentenced to a month’s imprisonment. Robert William Earl, also a member of the crew of the Hororata pleaded guilty to.receiving a quantity of sugar and cheese, valued at Bs, the property of the Union S.C Coy. He was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment.
