BOOKMAKERS CHARGED. i (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, July 17. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning there were sixteen charges of bookmaking and kindred offences as a result of a recent raid. Each defendant was charged with carrying on business as a bookmaker, betting on totalisator odds and issuing double charts. All pleaded not guilty to the bookinaking charge, but uilty to one or more of the others. The police offered no evidence where a plea of not guilty was entered: Fines of £2O were imposed on each charge, where a guilty plea was entered. The result was that George AlcGlash-a-ii was fined £4O on two charges of issuing double charts. John Allen was fined £BO on four charges of tote odds. Herbert John Allen (father of John Allen) was fined £4O on two charges of tote odds. Robert Mascall fined £6O for issuing double charts and two charges of tote odds. John Shore was fined £BO on four charges of tote odds. Oscar Royco Ulander, £lO on two charges of tote odds. Frank Edward Yates, on remand, for fraud and theft, was sentenced to three months hard. • Nelson Oswald Elb-ett, for being intoxicated in charge of a car was fined £lO and his license suspended, and disqualified for three years from driv-->”g- •• DAIRY COY.’S BONUS. -Vr-.-. A SUPPLIER’S CLAIAI. NEAY-PLYMOUTH, July 17. In the Supreme Court judgment as given by Justice Ostler in the case of AA’iiliam Johnson v. Eltliam Co.op. jjairy Factory Coy., a claim for £IUI 16s 7d, balance uue for milk supplied Jhe Company altered its articles so that if a member <iid not s’upply milk for a whole season lie should get no’ bonus. From November 4th, 1924, to February 28ili, 1925, he supplied onlj half his milk, and claimed £lOl odd, on the grounds that the change was ultra-vires. The Judge held that such could be made, but It mustj.-be brought to the notice of the suppliers; and plaintiff’s statement that he was not present at a meeting when it was adopted, and was ignorant of the decision,- must be accepted. RATE OF PAY. REFERENCE TO MARRIED MEN: BLENHEIM, July 17. Commenting on the Press Association message with reference to the rate-.of pay to married men on relief by the Wairau River Board, A'lr E. S. jL-arker, Chairman of the Board, sard it was difficu.t to understand the attitude of the Government, because -he—Board, before commencing operations, telegraphed Air E. A. Ransom, Public Works Minister,’ asking what rates of pay should be received. 'Phe' following reply was received: “In reply to your telegram yesterday I have' to -state your Board may pay whatever rate of wages it decidesupon, but the Government subsidy will not be paid on higher rates than 14’s a day. For example if the Bonn pays 15s it would, receive a . subsidy of 7s and would only have to pay 8out of town funds. E. A. Ransom.’
Air Parker said the message waclear enough and so the Board wasguided in fixing on 12 by the fact that 12s was the usual rate of pay iff this district for general labourers at the present time. The Alariborougli County Council is employing 105 men at 13s with an extra one shilling for those camping on the job.
N.Z. PIGEON CHAMPIONSHIPS. HASTINGS, July 17. The New Zealand pigeon champion; ship title was won by H. Clinch (AA’hangarei) after a- record shoot ol 29 birds, with E. Groome (Otane) second. The match was evenly contested all the way. Seven competitorhad one miss apiece. Clinch heat AT. Pratt (Otorchanga) for the aggregate trophy over all championship matches. A PROFITABLE TRIP. AUCKLAND, July 16. Having sold .three horses after lacing them successfully in Australia, there returned to Auckland by the (Marama to-day from Sydney Air 11. AA’. Burch; of Hamilton. Before taking the team comprising Stormy, Dalston and Becalmed across the Tasman three months ago, the Waikato sportsman made no secret of his intention to sell if sufficient inducement avere held out. For -the Iwo-vear-old Dalston. who was placed several times. Air Burch received £ISOO. for Stormy £6OO and for Becalmed £BSO.
The trip was very profitable, said Air Burch this morning, and, had Dalston put his head in front instead of being just beaten at Randwick. lie would have made a lot ol money. Stormy’s win in’ the second division of the Canterbury Park Cup meant just on £SOO. AIY Burch’s horses in eight starts won twice a.i.d were second three times.

Everson, of Ponsonby, who fell 40 feet from a ladder in the Calliope Dock to the concrete below this morning. Not a bone was broken. Everson was painting the side of tho Union Company’s ship Ivaikorai. He was standing on the ladder, which was placed against the side ot the ship from the dock. He slipped and crashed to the concrete. UNIDENTIFIED. WELLINGTON, July 16. About noon to-day the body of a man as yet unidentified was found hanging from a tree in the Botanical Gardens. No papers were in deceased’s pockets or anything else by which to establish his identity. The body is that of a man about thirty-seven years of age, five feet eight inches in height, with grey eyes, brown hair, clean shaven, with top teeth widely spaced, a prominent square jaw and his nose had been broken. His complexion was sallow, and he had a foreign appearance. He wore a brown Borsalino hat, a light brown gaberdine overcoat (purchased in Palmerston North), a new blue serge suit (purchased in Wellington), and patent leather shoes. The man’s collar bears the letters “ H.E.R.” written in marking ink. RAISE £420 FOR. RELIEF FUND OTAGO YAtISITY STUDENTS DUNEDIN, July 17. ' The Otago University capping carnival was held to-day in very wet weather. : Large crowds witnessed the procession of the students, whose high spirits' were-in ho 'way : damaged by the, weather conditions. A pleasing feature of the carnival was a collection taken by > the students in aid of -the earthquake relief, fund, £420 being raised during the day by a street collection. GTSBORNE RELIEF FUND. \ GISBORNE, July 18. ' The “Herald” earthquake relief fund has passed the thousand pounds mark. The funds of the district aggregate several hundreds of pounds.
PRESBYTERIAN C.O.’S. AUCKLAND, July 17. The .Presbyterian Divinity students Alan Morgan Richards and' Alexander Miller, who were each fined £5 for refusing to perform military training, paid their'fines to-day. At the time that Miller paid his fine, hep also made a-further application for exemption from drill, while it is expected that within the next few days Richards ,4yill follow suit. FIRE AT WYNDHAM. INVERCARGILL, July 17. A seven-roomed house at Wyndham was totally destroyed by fire this afternoon. Th.e dwelling was owned by Mr A. occupied'by’-Mr E: TixW land. Among the very little-furniture, saved was a piano, which was removed with difficulty. OXFORD TERRACE SHOOTING CHRISTCHURCH, July 17. There is an improvement to-day in the condition of E. Hammond, of Hammond and Turner, hardware merchants Oxford Terrace, who was shot at the firm’s premises last night at 9.30 by a young man whom he surprised there. Hammond is weak from loss of blood. The X-ray will be used to locate the bullet, which grazed the left lung. Hammond states that the man appeared to be about 20 years of age, with a very pale complexion, and was about six feet in heigkt, and of a very slight build.
