MAN SHOT
IN CHRISTCHURCH SHOP. INTRUDER CAUGHT ON PREMISES. ESCAPES AFTER WOUNDING CAPTURE 11, tßy Telegraph—Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 16. When E. Hammond, of Hammond and Turner, hardware merchants, Oxford Terrace, visited the firm’s premises about 9.30 this evening, lie surprised an intruder in the store at the back of the shop. He caught the intruder, a young man, and was taking him to the front door to hand • him.over to the police, when the captive drew a firearm and shot Hammond in the back. He then bolted towards the rear of the premises. Hammond managed to struggle on to the footpath where he called to passers-by telling them he was shot. The police were at once informed, and when they arrived, a thorough search, of the place was made, but without .any trace of the man..being Hound. Dr Alarks was summoned and after receiving attention, Air Hammond was removed to the hospital. He is suffering from a wound in.the hack, but. his, condition is not serious. .. . . He,states- that the man appeared to be about. 20 years of age,, with a very pale complexion, and was about 6 feet; in height, and of very , slight build.
