RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION

OPPOSITION TO SOUTH ISLAND MAIN TRUNK. ORGANISING MONSTER DEPUTATION. (By Telegraph Special to Guardian). WELLINGTON, July 17. A good deal ,of opposition is being organised against Government proposals affecting the completion of the South Island Main Trunk railway. xV strong feeling of antagonism is prevalent in many quarters in the North Island.

■lt is stated that when the matter comes before the House, some members will set up a stonewall to block the passage of the hill. Regarding the position of the Government, which is pledged to the completion of the line, it is understood the “Post” declares, that the policy of the Labour Party is to complete the main railway lines. In these circumstances it is not likely that any political'crisis will arise.

In order to fortify the position as much as possible, the South Island Progress Leagues are organising a monster deputation to visit Wellington on Friday. Otago and Canterbury will be largely represented, and also Marlborough. Mr J. O’Brien, M.P., has been asked to represent Westland Progress League.

Mr Strachan, ex-President of Canterbury League, will he the principal speaker and’will voice the views of the deputation which is being organised hv Mr P. R. Climie, of Christchurch. Many members of Parliament will he present at the meeting.
