AUSTRALIAN TARIFF
COMMISSION’S REPORT. (Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, July 16. A committee of five exports appointed by the Prime Minister to report upon the Australian tariffs lias issued a report. Jt considers some applications and the extension of protection lias been wasteful and cost more than the benefits gained. The committee declared the adoption of a considerable amount of protection was justified on economic grounds, and Australia, with, its present population had enough resources to stand the strain. Nevertheless a limit of protection had now been reached. Australian products had cost thirty-six millions more than 'the same goods could be imported duty free into tlie Commonwealth. The report, on the otlier hand, refers to protection’s general contributions to national happiness and prosperity.
