ATLANTIC FLIGHT
tWO PLANES BEGIN. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). PARIS, July 13. Two Atlantic competition flights started from Le Bourget this morning. The Polish airmen, Idzikowski and Kubala, set off at 4.25 a.m. Later, ,the Frenchmen, Costes and Belloutes, started at 5.20 a.m. The latter’s plane flew over Santander (Spain) at 9.30 a.m. PROGRESS OF THE PLANES. PARIS, July 13. Kubala’s aeroplane Was sighted at nine o’clock in the morning in latitude 40.25 north, and longitude 9.8 west, at a height of 800 feet. Costes’, plane has sent a wireless message that it was flying without hitch, and was half way to the Azores. ENDURANCE FLIGHT. . 'J. VANCOUVER,, July 12. A Culver City message says: The Angeland plane landed at 2.30 p.m. to-day, afer having been 14,803 minutes in the air. “We came down because the tail group started fluttering” said Mendel] COSTES TURNS BACK. (Received this day at 8 a.m.) . LONDON, July 14. A message from Villacoublay states Costes has landed safely, COSTES TURNS' BACK. GOT THE WIND UP! . (Received this day at 9.25 a.m.) LONDON, July 14. A message from Villa Condlay •'states Costes explains that strong head winds three hundred miles from the coast reduced the speed from 125 miles to 40 or 50 miles an hour and he turned back Jfor fear of running out of petrol in mjd-ocean. He had not dreamt that tiie east to westcrossing was so difficult. , He would rather i fly from New York to Paris ten times than once from Paris to New York.
FORCED DOWN. .' ONE AVIATOR KILLED. (Received this dav at 8.30. a.m.) , . LISBON, July 14. The Polish aviators failed to make Horta where a special landing place was lit up throughout the night. They were forced down at sea ow T ing gine trouble near an island. Graciose Idzikowski was killed and Kubalu was rescued. The machine was wrecked. EMERGENCY LANDING. PARIS, July 13. The Air Ministry announces the receipt of a wireless from Lisbon that Costes, after passing north of Azores at six o’clock in the evening, had turned back to France at 6.15 p.m. He was reported . from Horta Poles, about 30 miles "from Fayal Island at 6.30 and he 'was preparing to make an emergency landing.
