BOUGHT BY BARTER.

JOHANNESBURG, May 29. An Englishman named Thomas Webster confessed in court here to-day that he had forgotten his own language. He also admitted buying a Zulu woman ifrom her father for a price determined in. cattle, thus marrying her according to ( Zulu custom. Webster was charged under the law directed against miscegenation (the sexual union of whites and natives). An official interpreter had to be employ ed to turn his evidence into English and translate the proceedings for him into the Zulu dialect. He declared that he had married the native 15 years ago in Accordance with the practice of her tribe, paying “lobola.”

“Lobola” is the legally estblished consideration demanded by a Zulu father as the price of his property—his daughters. The usual price is 10 head of cattle apiece. There were three children of Webster’s marriage ,but he stated that his wife was now in a mental institution.

The judge declining to address an Englishman in a Kaffir tongue, imposed a sentence of one day’s imprisonment.
