VICE REGAL INTEREST

IN EARTHQUAKE EFFECTS. (By Telegraph-Press Association). WELLINGTON, July 12. Their Excellencies the Governor General and Lady Alice Fcigussorpropose to visit next week some ol the areas on the West Coast of the South Island which have been bad;> affected by the earthquake. They are leaving Wellington on Tuesday evening next. Their Excellencies will arrive at Greymouth the following afternoon. The following morning (Tliursdav, 18th July) they will leave Greymouth by motor, arriving at Westport that afternoon. Friday and Saturday will be spent in the Westport and Seddonville areas, and on Sunday afternoo i Reefton will be reached. On Monday, July 22, Their Excellencies will leave Reefton for Murchison, provided the roads are not impassable, and they hope to reach there early that afternoon. They will stay at Murchison for the night,- and wid leave the following day for Nelson, catching the steamer the same evening for Wellington, where they are due to arrive on the morning of Wednesday, July 24.

AUCKLAND COASTERS’ FUNCTION. AUCKLAND, July 11. There were 500 at the West Coasters’ Association -social in aid of the earthquake sufferers. The; visitors were inspired with a real West Coast spirit, and enjoyed the dancing under the direction of Jack Thurlow and Hugh Montgomery. A flag collection in the hall realised £5. A card tourney was won by Mrs Barry, Greymouth, and Jim Hobbs, junr., Westport. It is estimated that the effort, which was on a small scale, will rea lise a profit of £SO for the relief fund. Mr Wm. F. Schramm, President uf. the Association, said:— ‘We want you Auckland people to make yourselves quite at home. We appiocuue the fine support you have .given our friends at home who have been hard hit by the ’quake and flood, and we Coasters living here Have no conception of the magnitude of the devastation and havoc wrought. Unt we know tljev feel gratified with ths response made onfall sides iO; the appeal for assistance.” '
