SOVIET EXECUTIONS
RIGA (Batavia), May 29. Horror is expressed by the entire Baltic Press at the shooting in Moscow by order of Yagoda, the acting chief of the Cheka (the Soviet terrorist police), who is replacing Menzhinskv, of M. von Meek, Wolitschko, and Baltschinski, all over CO years of age. M. von Meek was formerly one of the
wealthiest men in Russia; M. Welitscliko was on the General Staff in Czaitdays; VI. Baltschinski was formerly Vice-Minister of Trade and Industry in the Kerensky regime. All three survived the early years of the Red Terror, later obtaining posts in the Soviet Government and working their way up to important positions. M. von Meek became bead of the Committee of Construction of the Commissariat of Coimmruication, Wolitschko his assistant, and Baltschinski the head of the Geological Institute at Petrograd.
The Cheka, however, charged them with working for a foreign Power, plotting to disorganise the gold and platinum industries and the railroads, and to overturn the Soviet Government. They were accordingly executed without trial in a cellar of the Moscow Lubianka Prison at o a.in. yesterday.
