TRADE BARRIERS
REMOVAL URGED. (United Press Association—By Electrm Telegraph—Copyright). v AMSTERDAM, July 9. Tho Congress of International Chambers of Commerce has opened here. It is attended by twelve hundred delegates from thirty-eight countries. The President of the Chamber Do Opirelli. appealed to the Governments to ratify the 1928 Convention for the abolition of restrictions on imports and exports. Referring to the tariff policy of thr United States, the President said that America had more to gain from the de velopment of Europe, which took half of the United States exports, than she had to fear from increased European competition in the world’s markets. Hie Transport and Communications Group of the Conference passed a resolution recommending the universal adoption of the League rules governing hills of lading. Mr Freshin advocated the abolition of flag discrimination and Customs formalities. These obstacles, he said often drove off trade altogether. ,\lr Alan Anderson said that Portugal and Peru had been mentioned as having been especially vexatious for port dues. Personally, he wondered why thosd advocating such stringent protection did not follow the policy its natural conclusion, and allow their ports to silt up entirely, which would prevent competition altogether.
