PARLIAMENTARY.
SPEAKER, OF COUNCIL. HON. W. CARNCROSS RE-ELECTED (By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, July 10. The Legislative Council met at 10 a.m. to-day for the purpose of electing a Speaker. The galleries were cleared during the election procedure and on re-opening of the doors it was announced that Sir IV. Carncross had been reelected by a unanimous vote. In expressing thanks, the Speaker said he had tried to live up to the example of liis distinguished predecessors in patience, courtesy, and impartiality. The fact that he had been not unsuccessful was probably proved by the fact that the Council had seen fit to reelect him.
Sir Walter expressed pride at the honour bestowed on him and added that he would always to the best of his ability try to perform his duties as they had a right to expect from their Speaker. The Leader of the Council briefly congratulated Sir Walter on behalf of the Council and Government, pointing out that he was not only the oldest member of the Council, but that there was no other member of the Legislature to-day who had seen more legislative service. He expressed the hope that Sir Walter would live long to adorn the office of Speaker. Other tributes were paid by Sir F. D. Bell (late leader of the Council), Hon. Barr (Chairman of Committees) and Hon. Allison. The Council adjourned at 10.45 a.m. until 24th July.
