Although Australia is passing through a period of economic depression, there are signs of the position improving, declares the Commonwealth Statistician, Mr C. Wickens. The latest trade figures for the financial year just ended indicate that there will be a balance of exports over imports of about £5,000,000. The migration to Australia was lower last year than for years previously. The birth rate was also lower. The death rate was higher. The Statistician added that periods of depresison were always accompanied by a lower birth rate and a higher death rate.
