The death occurred at the Reefton Hospital yesterday of Mrs Thompson, wife of Mr D. Warwick Thompson, Maruia. The deceased lady was 38 years of age, and was removed from Maruia to Reefton the previous day. Last week the goods traffic through the Otira tunnel from.the West Coast to Canterbury was 13,532 tons, as compared with 12,258 tons for the corresponding period last year. On Monday the t°tnl was 2250 tons and yesterday 2000 tolls.
To-night week the annual ball in aid of the funds of the Hokitika Fire Brigade takes place in the Soldiers’ Hall. This annual gathering is always well attended in appreciation of the services rendered, and should prove a very enjoyable gathering. The following cases of notifiable diseases were reported to the Medical Officer of Health (Dr T. F. Telford) for the week ended at noon on Monday. West Coast: Diphtheriq. 3, puerperal sepsis 2; Canterbury: Scarlet fever 34, pneumonic- influenza 3, pneumonia 4 ,septic abortion 1, actinomycosis 1, food poisoning 1, tuberculosis 7. There were two deaths in Canterbury from tuberculosis.
The entries for the Poultry Show in the Soldiers’ Hall on Friday and Saturday next are of a very satisfactory nature and assure a very fine display. In the Old English Game section, there is good competition, numerous entries in the various classes, aiinorcas and Plymouth Rocks have a good entry and the utility classes are well filled, White Leghorns being the popular fancy. In the pigeon classes there is also a good entry, the whole ensuring a good exhibition.
The Westport “Times” says; Rather an interesting episode took place during the ’quake on Monday just afternoon. A Westport business man was talking to Grevniouth. The Westport man broke off the conversation by saying that an earthquake was taking place. The Greymouth man replied: “It is not here yet.” About two seconds later, the Greymouth man announced the arrival of the ’quake and said the building was rocking heavily. He advised the Westport man to “Go for his life.”

Mr J. H. E. Schroder, who has been Associate Editor of the Christchurch * Sun” for the last three years, has been appointed Assistant Editor of the Christchurch “Press.” Mr Schroder is a son of Mr J. F. W. Schroder of Hokitika.
The Kokatahi Ladies’ Hockey Club arc holding their annual ball on Wednesday, July 31st. This year the ball is being held in the Soldiers’ Hall, and the Black Hand Orchestra will supply the music. The supper will be homemade and Kokatahi housewives are famous in this department.
The next debate between St. Mary’s Club (Hokitika) and St. Columba Club (Greymouth), for the Stuart Cup, is being held on Tuesday, July 23rd. at St. Columba’s Hall, the subject being, “The Question of Whether State Control of Land and Industry is Preferable to Private Enterprise.” The debate will be followed by a social and dance.
Mrs E. J. ScanQebury, of Nelson, formerly of lteefton, sustained a serious injury on Saturday afternoon, resulting in a compound fracture of the right leg. She was lifting a box off a high shelf, and the chair on which she was standing overbalanced and Mrs Scantlebury fell on to the floor, the box falling on her leg, inflicting the injury mentioned. The unfortunate lady was taken to the hospital, and the nature of the injury will necessitate her being there ' some considerable time.
The death took place on July Bth at Claudelands, Hamilton, of Rose, widow of the late William Stephenson, of Hamilton. The late Mrs Stephenson was 64 years of age and a native of England, and for many years lived at Kanierd, Maori Creek, and Greymouth. Sue leaves a family of four sons and four daughters. Messrs C. A. Lar-i combe, of Patea, and E. and W. Larcombe, of Greymouth, are brothers. Mrs D. Heenan, of Hokitika, and Mrs J. Meehan, of Surrey Crescent, Auckland, are sisters of the deceased.
Under thle Rabbit Nuisance Act it is an offence to keep live rabbits of any sort unless a permit has been procured from the Department. The penalty is a severe one, the maximum being a £2O fine, with an imprisonment penalty for removing them from, one place to another without authority.' The matter Has been brought under our notice officially, and it would l>e as well for those who keep rabbits to take the necessary action to comply with the law. Full particulars can be obtained on application to the local Stock Inspector, Mr O. S. Neville.
