BOXING TOURNEY

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. At the Princess Theatre on Saturday evening there was an excellent attendance in spite of the inclement night when the tourney of the Hokitika Boxing and Gymnastic Club took place. Complete arrangements had been made and the various bouts were put on in rapid succession, there not being a dull moment. Unfortunately some of tire contestants from the north did not put in an appearance, and this shortened the proceedings, but the bouts were all good and in a couple of instances were very exciting. Mr Frank O’Neill was referee and his decisions were always received with approval. The following are the details: FLY-WEIGHT. J. Atkinson (Hokitika) beat C. Cook (Arahura). BANTAM WEIGHT. N. Rowe 8.0 (Hokitika) beat F. Saxon 8.2 (Hokitika). Final—N. Rowe 8.2 beat J. Tennant 8.2. FEATHER? WEIGHT. . V 't ! V i J;?(Geo. Freitas s.l2j j (Hokitika) beat Gy Davidson 9.0 (Hokitika). Final—T. LIGHT WEIGHT O. Ferguson 9.12 (Mananui) beat M. Duggan 9.4 (Greymouth). Ibis was one of the best bouts of the evening. Final —C. Ferguson 9>12 and R. Wright 9.10 (Kokatahi) drew. This Was the liveliest bout. In the first two •ounds Wright had an advantage and oiled up the points, but in the final round Ferguson got home with a (Succession of telling blows and almost had his man out at the finish. The decision of a draw met with popular approval. • . , j‘: ■ MIDDLE AVEIGHT. T. Croft 11.4 (Stillwater) bent: J. Davidson 11.0 (Three Mile). < Mr F. McGregor (President) in a concluding speech thanked the audience fdr their attendance. Mr F. O’Neill for acting as referee, and giving Isuch (general satisfaction, and presented Mr Langford’s gold medal for the most scientific boxer, awarded by Mr O’Neill, to J. Atkinson (Hokitika) and congratulated him on his success. During the evening a junior orchestra supplied musical accompaniments.
