THE EMDEN
INSPECTED BY BIG CROWD. AUCKLAND, July 1. Only the massive steel gates at the entrance to Central Wharf prevented a.stampede and chaos when the Emden was open fcr public inspection yesterday afternoon. Disappointed thousands surged in Quay Street, ancl several times the gate bolts threatened to yield to the pressure. The closing of the gates was a very unpopular one, but i>. was necessary for the safety of the crowd, which exceeded the conti o' capacity of police and Harbour Board officials after about 2JOO had beeV. admitted to the wharf, when faitl had to he placed in the security of the gates.
