■(.Received tin's day at 9.25 a.m.) \ LONDON, July 2. In the test cricket 'between England and South Africa, ; Leyland and Tate made a magnificent stand and staved off a threatening defeat, even giving England a chance of victory, scoring 129 in seventy-five minutes, despite the valiant efforts of the South Africans.
Morkel was getting much spin and pace on the hall from a worn pitch. He early took Hendren’s middle stump, the ball coming in from the leg side to break six inches. He similarly dismissed Hammond, who was crippled and had Crawley as runner. The score stood at 4 for 93. Crawley remained to for O’Connor, who was handicapped by an injury. He snicked a leg ball to Cameron and the score stood at 5 for 133.
The situation appeared desperate when Tate came in and lie gave the pluckiest display of fireworks He slashed Ochso to the boundary for the first ball. Leyland was batting more freely, hitting Morkel, when lie was again brought on, for two fours and one two in one over. He reached fifty-six in two hours. At this stage almost every ball yielded a- run, the South African’s overkeenness apparently affecting the players.
The Prince of Wales arrived after lunch and received the teams. He witnessed Leyland and Tate complete centuries. Leyland in a good all round display gave one possible chance when 27 and finally he was caught offhand when drawing away from the hall. Tate continued punching runs in all river nous and completed his first test century in under two hours. The South Africans set out to get 292 in 2f hours in the presence of ten thousand spectators. They speedily fell behind the clock. The first hour produced forty-four. Christie brightened up filings temporarily, but nter lost three wickets for twenty-five.,
