TRAIN MISHAP

FURTHER PARTICULARS. (By Telegraph—Press Association). - WANGANUI, June 29. The derailment was the scene off great confusion where the goods train .•went over the embankment. The spot on which the accident 1 occurred was built up ground, taken from a cutting in the vicinity, and probably had been by the earthquake and saturated by heavy rain. ) The hank slipped -away under the weight of a seventy-ton-locorriotive engine. Several trucks laden with, coal, timber, fruit and fish toppled down the embankment, the engine falling upside down into creek. The driver, E. Willslier, and fireman, R. Green, had a miraculous escape from death. Luckily they did fiiot jump. If/ they had they certainly would have been, killed." They managed to crawl out between the engine and tender. Green was burnt badly by escaping steam, but Willslier escaped injury except for a slight cut on the hand.

Railwayinen here state the wreck is much worse than that which occurred at Pnokakarika a week ago, and will take some days to clear, the engine being in a difficult position to lift. The rails are buckled and broken. Fortunately there were no passengers. If there had been, loss of life would have been probable. i '
