Owing to the state of the ground at Girev mouth all the senior football games, there to-day were postponed. The junior games in Hokitika district are taking place.
Air J. F. Downey, mining inspector, of Wailii, formerly of Reel ton, says there is a possibility of alluvial gold being found as the result ol the earthquake in the South. Numbers of rich patches have been found in the disturbed area, and it is possible that the slips have revealed other deposits, but as far as -mirchison is concerned, it is improbable that anything in the way of quart/, reel's wi.l be revealed. Reefs may be exposed in the Alokihinui River district, between Westport and Karamea.
In the Legislative. Council on Thursday, leave was granted to members of the Council as follow:—Hon All* AVitty six days (on account of illness in his family); the Hon. Mr Isitt, two days (illness in his family) ; Sir Edwin Alitchelson, 14 days (illness); Hon Air Fleming, six days (bereavement in his, family); Hon Air Triggs, remainder of session (absence from Dominion); Hon Air Scott, seven days (private business) and Hon. Alichel, fourteen days (illness).
The death took place on Thursday evening of Air James Frederick White of Willowdale, Aliaurn, aged 74 years. Deceased appeared to be in good health and was working within a few days <)•' his demise. He had resided in the Aha lira district for many years, and was well known and highly respected. His wife predeceased him several years ago. He is survived by three daughters, two of whom are married Mrs Mackley, of Shakespeare Street was a sister-in-law.
At a meeting of the Directors of the Hokitika this Company yesterday, appreciation was expressed at the manner in which Air G. Heinz (Works Manager) and his staff woriced in connection with the damage caused by the earthquake. The worst feature was the ,eaks which necessitated extra gas being made, while repairs were effected, .cry loyal service was rendered by he staff, and the thanks of the Direc,ors was conveyed to the staff through Mr Heinz. It was also decided to relay some damaged mains and -effect general improvements in the reticulation at a cost of about £2OO.
The weather conditions yesterday afternoon which had eased somewhat became very rough and inclement as the night wore on. The southerly gale increased in velocity and was accompanied by very heavy hail and rain storms, while a thunder storm about •11.30 p.m. was of a very realistic nature, the flash and crash being almost simu.taneous. Throughout the night the rough experience continued, and though conditions eased clown somewhat, alter daylight broke, the day does not show much improvement, the .turning being blustery, cold and we; ,s the morning wore on the sun came out and the hills c eared, showing a great fall of snow has taken place. • lie -southerly wind was bitterly cold.
For the first time in twenty-nine years the Leader of the Legislative Council, remarked at Thursday’s siting of that Chamber tha.t there was no necessity for the Council at the beginning of the new session to mourn the loss of members or ex-members who had passed away in the Parliamentary recess. “It is over a quarter of a century—some 29 years—since the ordinary session of the Council commenced in similar circumstances,’’ said the Hon. Mr Sidey. “It is in very happy circumstances, therefore, that 1 am privileged to meet the Council for the first time as its Leader in an ordinary working session, and I hope such conditions, may very long continue.”
