SWEARING-IN PROCEDURE

RUGBY, June 26,

The picturesque ceremony of electing a new speaker for the House of Commons was completed to-day. The King’s approval to Captain Fitzrov’s selection as Speaker was communicated to• Speaker-elect and the members of the House of Commons, who were summoned to the House of Lords for the purpose. On returning, the Speaker donned the official robes, made the usual declaration, announcing that lie had, in the name and on behalf of the Commons, laid claim to all their ancient undoubted rights and privileges/ particularly those of free dom from arrest. Having returned thanks to the C minions for the honour; he took the oath and signed the Roll. The members of the Government, led by the Prime Minister, then filed past the Speaker and took the oath, and signed the roll. The occiipanls of the front Opposition Bench next proceeded to the table, and over 250 private members then followed. Tin* swearing-in of the members will he completed to-morrow.
