CHRISTCHURCH, June 28
A party of lilty-two refugees from the earthquake zone arrived in Christchurch .last evening. Lor the most part they come irom Upper Maiakiuiki Valley and lnue pititul taies to tell of the havoc wrought to their homes and the countryside.
“We are all going hack,” said one party, “but whether or not we will he able to settle again is a question. We will have to save as much ol our stock as we can and recover what we can of the personal and household goods.” The refugees have been billeted lor a fortnight.
MADLBOROUGH ASSISTANCE
BLENHEIM, June 28
Following on receipt of offers of assistance to Blenheim sufferers in the earthquake disaster, the Borough Council last evening requested the press to broadcast the fact that no real damage was done in Marlborough 1
and no financial assistance was required. The Mayor said Marlborough was fortunate, being able to offer assistance instead of receiving it. The Council voted £SO to the West Coast relief fund and the A.M.P. Association contributed £25. MURCHISON REQUESTS. FOR IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE. NELSON, June 28. The men of Murchison are anxious to return. It has, however, been strongly represented by the Murchison Emergency Committee that only strong men with work to go to should return there. The general hope is that the work of reconstruction will he thoroughly organised.
A meeting of Murchison residents passed the following resolutions which have been sent to the Hon. H. At-
“ That the Government be asked immediately to establish relief camps where required so as to engage all available Murchison residents who are anxious to return for the purpose of opening up the road from Glenhope to M.u rchison.”
“That the Government he requested to commission the Public Works Deoartment to restore all homes in the township of Miircliisori as rapidly as possible.” “That this meeting of-Murchison residents respectfully urges the Gov•rnment to make available a sum of money sufficient for restoration of the Murchison County roads and that progress authority for the expenditure of £IOOO be issued forthwith to Murchison County Council.”
A further resolution was carried thanking the Mayor of Nelson (Mr IV. J. Moffat) for the Work he had done.
TTMARU HARBOUR. BOARD DONATION.
TTMARU, June 28
The Timnru Harbour Board,.at a meeting to-day voted £IOO to the earthquake relief fund.
