WELLINGTON, June 2G. ft was suggested to the PostinasiorGenornl by a member of a deputation ill is morning that the charge of threepence in distant suburban call boxes should he reduced to one penny, but Mr Donald said that it was very doubtful whether a reduction could he made. Even in a district where the automatic system was installed, it had bo be remembered that a long length of cable had to be provided. The question o. reduction was one of policy. Towns in all parts of New Zealand would he affected.
A member of the deputation: Do you think the overhead charges are too heavy to allow the fee to be reduced? Mr Donald: Tt is a hit early to speak about that. The Minister told the deputation that towns and boroughs throughout .ho Dominion were asking for the very latest in telephone equipment, but a large sum was involved and people con'd not he given everything immediately. The Department was out for business, but it would not get a great deal of business if it charged £*lo for telephone services from outlying districts to the cities.
