ROADS IN COUNTRY DISTRICTS
ALLOCATION OF GRANTS. IMPROVED METHOD OFDISTRIBUTION. WELLINGTON, June 25. The preparation of the Public Works estimates has enabled local authorities to discover that changes are being made in the proportion of public works road grants to various road districts. Eight counties in North Auckland arc combining to intervie,w the Hon E. A. Ransom, Minister of Public Worlds, on the subject with a protest against what they allege to be a 25 per cent, “cut” in their allocations.
The position is not exactly as they believe. Grants are allocated to road districts on a formula designed to give Kelp where most needed, and where local ratepayers are heavily burdened. However, it has been found that this method is not equitable throughout tlie Dominion, and the Minister ol Public Works has made changes. The Whangarei and North Auckland areas have certainly suffered reductions, hut still obtained Hie highest proportion. Among districts which benefit from tire change nro Stratford and the

Doubtless the Minister of Public -r.orks will explain tlie new systeiy in greater detail to the deputation, for lie is prepared to justify it as affording better distribution without decreasing the sum total available from the Public Works Fund for road ing in too country districts.
