ALLEGED FRAUD

AX AUCKLAND CASE. AUCKLAND, June 24. Following the unexpected departure from Auckland of two men who were carrying on business in a suite ol offices in the Dilwortb Building,'Queen St., the police received a complaint. As a result of investigations made b. detectives, Arthur E. Strange was arrested at Thames on Saturday, and a warrant was issued for the arrest o' John Tabor, who was last heard ol in Wellington, and who. it is thought, may have left the Dominion for Australia.

Strange a,p pea red in the Thames Magistrate’s Court on Saturday on a charge of obtaining £loo from Arthur Frederick Rowe’,' of Auckland, on June 12th. by fnlely representing that lit had a sound publishing company in Auckland at the Diiuorlh Building, and that lie was sole agent for certain publications, among thorn “The TO3C Catholic Review,” for Hie distribut'd! of which in Catholic Churches he had tlie authority of ■ the head of tN Church. Accused was remanded to appear in Auckland next Saturday, bail of £2OO being allowed. With regard to the Catholic periodical, for which it is alleged that Strange claimed to be agent, a disclaimer was recently issued by Dr Cleary. Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, stating that it had conic to his notice that canvassing for a proposed Catholic journal. to bo published in Auckland, had been carried out. Under the Church Law, no periodical could be given the authority of the- Church without the consent of the Bishop, and no consent had been given for the publishing of any new journal.. Should such a paper lie established, its circulation through the Church or any of the branches of the Church would not be permitted. Bishop Cleary also mentioned that thr only Catholic periodical circulating in Auckland was the “Month,” and that no other journal would receive official recognition.
