BOOKMAKING CHARGE
ATTEMPT AT FRAUD. TIMARU, June 22. After linvinp lodged several bets for the T’imaru races with John James McGili'ord. of Lyttelton, lurepresented himself as a booXmai-.or Patrick Frederick Fordo, a \isiLoi from Southland, became nr-piclou: and notified the police. Consequently McGifl'ord appeared. at the Magistrate’s Court this morning to answer a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker at Tiiunru on June 21st. McGifford and bis brother, Patrick Raymond McGifford, weie charged with being deemed ~o he idle and disorderly persons in that they had insufficient lawful means of support. The evidence showed that both the accused had used false names and addresses, this fact and the evidence of John James McGifford calling forth strictures from the presiding Justice. On the bookmaking elm Igo McGifford was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour, and one month’s imprisonment on the other charge, the sentences to he. conctircurent. His brother was convicted and discharged, conditional on his leaving Timnru by the first train.
