A THEORY

ORIGIN TX VOLCANIC DISTURBANCES? One gentleman in Wellington, when discussing the earthquake, said that in his heliel the dubbing of the earthquake an eruption might not be so far short of the man,'. He recalls Uio lad that less than a fortnignt ago it was reported by cablegram that Vesuvius (.near -Naples, m Italy) had oraken out with great violence, immense streams ot lava were being ejected, and villages were being evacuated. As late a.s yesterday another cable message recorded a serious volcanic disturbance in .Japan, which like Italy is in a volcanic belt. New Zealand was also in the Western Pacific volcanic belt, and had Ht. Ngaruhoe and the thermal regions of the North Island to remind us how near we are to the eternal subterranean fires. From time to time the action of such fires, feeding always on the gases, oils, and chemical content of the earth’s body, must have the effect of the displacing or corroding vast masses of the internal content of the earth, and those places where the crust is thinnest, experience such displacement in the form of earthquakes. For that reason our informant is inclined to the belieft that there is an affinite between the earthquakes experienced in New Zealand, (and recorded a s far away as Ottawa, in Canada) and the recent volcanic disturbances in:.other parts of the globe.
