CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.

FRIDAY, JUNE 21. The Board held the monthly meeting at Christchurch on Friday. Present :—Messrs W. H. Winsor (chairman), W. A. Banks, W. P. Spencer, G. W. Armitage, H. J. Bignell, T. Hughes, 11. Wild and J. G. Gow. A letter was received from the Child Wolfare Committee inviting members to be present at a meeting to consider the after-care of pupils i’rom special classes. It was resolved Jiat as many members as possible should attend the meeting. The organisers submitted a wall chart entitled, “The Animals’ Petition,” which it hoped the board would have framed and hung on the-school walls. The matter was referred to the favourable consideration of committees and teachers.. It was asiten also that arrangements should bo made for the attendance of older pupils at the Christchurch Cathedral on June 23, when a special service would bo given on the subject of “Kindness to Animals.” The matter was referred to local schools.

Appointments confirmed included— To Kinga, Mr L. F. Thompson, sole teacher. Resignations accepted included— Okarito, Miss E. James; Ross, Miss I. Lloyd ; Runanga, Miss G. A. Gardiner; Weheka, Miss E. H. Dennehy. AGRICULTURE. The Agricultural and Manual and Technical Committee reported that it had agreed that the secretary should be asked, when engaging relieving teachers to emphasise the necessity on their part for due attention being )■* id to agriculture as to all other subjects of the school syllabus. A circular dealing with this question will be issued to all relieving teachers upon their engagement to any school. It was also decided to ask the principal of the Training College to bring this matter under the notice of students in training. A letter was received from the Education Department stating that the board’s application for an initial grant to cover the cost of science equipment for primary schools necessitated by the requirements of the new syllabus was under consideration.
