THE COMPETITIONS

PROGRAM.ME ISSUED. The Book of Words for liie Westland Competitions to he held at uie Princess theatre on Monday, luesday, and Wednesday, 9th, 10th and lltli September, is now in general oircilihaion. the adjudicators are: Music and elocution, Mr L. Clilfe Stanford, 8.A., and dancing, Miss Muriel .naugli, both of Christchurch. Entries lor all sections close on zBUi" August. The juvenile section is on lines similar to previous years. There are •several classes, according to ages, with own selected matter, and in addition special test matter is also set lor competition in both elocution and reading. A children’s dialogue is a new and .should be interesting class.

The Open section is also built on lines similar to last year, excepting that new selected matter is provided for both ladies and gentlemen. New tests are set lor the Shakespeare recital; there is a story without words; the number of characters for the playettes is increased, and a special class for recitation from any New Zealand author is provided. Tho musical section, covers both vocal and instrumental, as well as open and juvenile sections. .New numbers have been selected for the test items. Tho choir and choral items promise to be better filled this year, and there is a change of anthem as well as hymn for the choirs. The selected music for the various events promises to produce some attractive work. The dancing section has been . remodelled entirely and should prove very attractive. The classes are spread according to the years of the competitors, so that the entry for this section should be large.

The Society this year is establishing a special membership at a fee of £1 to assure the stability of the organisation, and many are being enrolled.. The subscription carries with it free admission to all sessions (excepting the final demonstration) but with prior rights for booking fob the demonstration concert. Family tickets will be provided as heretofore for the session.
