FOR EMPIRE NEEDS. , Auetralian Press Association) (United Service.) (Received this day at 5.30. a.m.) LONDON, .nine 18. Sir Herbert Mathews, ex-Secretary of the Chamber of Agriculture, addressing the Royal Empire Society, following the growth of the use ot wood pulp newsprint said there was a grave danger of a shortage of the Empire’s timber supply. The increasing requirements for pulp, timber lor collieries. building and various other purposes, cannot he met indefinitely from the existing supplies. While the Empire supply of hardwood is sufficient for future needs the supply of soft woods is- rapidly disappearing, bjut in Australia, South Africa and particularly New Zealand, there arc* tracts of otherwise waste lands where suitable trees can be grown more advantageously than in many other parts of the world. He urged commercial interests to realise the opportunity and provide ndquato supplies of timber in the Empire.
