SIR DUDLEY DE CHAIR
MAY BE NEXT AUSTRALIAN GOVERNOR-GENERAL. ' SYDNEY, June 6. Dame Rumour, who is not always a lying jade, is persistently associating the name of the Governor of New South Wales, Sir Dudley de Chair, now in his last extended year of office, with the post of Governor-General of Australia when Lord Stonehaven retires. Current gossip that the Premier (Mr Bavin), now on a visit to London, has •been authorised to inform the British Government that Sir Dudley would be welcomed as Governor-General, is denied, but the fact remains that he vould be warmly welcomed in that higher office, at least by those who have learned to know and appreciate him. No Governor probably lias been more popular in New South Wales than Sir Dudley. That he will be an unofficial ambassador for the State on his return to London is unquestioned. Sir Dudley, far from restricting himself to what might be termed the hot house atmosphere otf the gubernatorial office, or to those who ordinarily move in the charmed circle of Government House, has created a close and sympathetic contact with all classes. Far from affecting superior airs, he has manifested that breezy, democratic homeliness which appeals to Australians. What is more he lias avoided political trouble. Sir Dudley is not of the first watei oratorically, but he possesses quite a lot of fine human qualities. If Australia or whatever authority it is at home that decrees these matters, persists in having a Governor for each State and also a Governor-General, then it might do far worse than promote Sir Dudley to the higher office.
