BUILDING RANSACKED

BURGLARS SMALL HAUL. AUCKLAND, June 17. While there was considerable excitemont in Shortland street last night owing to the presence of a Commercial Hotel porter using a ladder on a fire escape to clean a chimney and the, crowd gathered, anticipating the capture of some desperado, an active member of the burglar fraternity was actually operating in adjacent premises occupied by Brookfield Prendergast, and Schnauer, barristers and solicitors. Entrance was effected by climbing 'down a pipe to the third storey and through a window left open for ventilation. He ransacked every office in the building, leaving behind a trail of used matches and cigarette butts. He forced open the door oi the strong-room, but was unablo lo open the safes inside. He broke into Mr .Prendergast’s office and stole a five-chambered revolver. Beyond this his gains evidently amounted to a few shillings.
